地震だ！
　年が明けて間もない3日夜10時半ころサイパンでは非常に珍しい地震が発生した。早寝早起きの私はすでに夢の中だったが「わざわざ時間を確認する気になるくらい」の揺れだった。こちらでは日本と違って震度4とか5という風な震度では発表されずマグニチュードであらわされますが寝ぼけてる状態の個人的な主観で言えば震度4くらいではなかったかな？と。
　1990年以降サイパンで地震の経験はほとんどないのですが、その中で記憶にあるのはグアムで空港もホテルも大被害があった10年位前の「グアム大地震」。サイパンは特に被害はなったがあの時もかなり揺れたことを覚えています。今回は「ああ、津波は大丈夫かなぁ･･･」と思いつつ気が付けば朝になっていました（海抜1mくらいの場所に寝ているんですけどね(^^ゞ）

AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the Mariana islands on Tuesday night, according to the Emergency of Management Office said. EMO said based on the information received from the National Earthquake Information Center in Denver, Colorado, the earthquake happened at 10:28 p.m. Tuesday and was located about 15 miles southeast of Rota, 95 miles southsouthwest of Saipan, 79 miles southsouthwest of Tinian, 54 miles northeast of Guam and 175 miles south of Anatahan EMO said that according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, there is no tsunami threat as of this time to the Marianas. Juan T. Camacho, EMO’s geophysical seismic technician, said in a phone interview yesterday that the duration of the quake was seven minutes but it was felt by the public for three to four seconds only. Camacho said it was the second earthquake on Tuesday. The first one occurred at 4 p.m. and was located 20 miles westsouthwest of Agrigan, 40 miles northnorthwest of Pagan and 235 miles north of Saipan. The last major earthquake to strike the CNMI happened on Feb. 5, 2005 with a 6.6. magnitude and was located 50 miles north of Saipan. Some concrete structures were cracked, glassware was shattered and damaged household and grocery items were reported by residents and commercial establishments. In other news, EMO said that a ridge of high pressure centered between Japan and the Northern Marianas will result in gentle to moderate trade winds. A cold front moving eastward from Japan will generate moderate north swells Friday and Saturday. A trade wind disturbance passing south of the Marianas will also bring increased shower chances on Friday and Saturday. Thursday through Friday will be mostly cloudy with isolated showers while Friday night through Saturday night will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Sunday will be partly cloudy with isolated showers. Benavente at the same time backed the Department of Public Safety’s plan to close the Grotto during bad weather. “It is a good idea because many dive shops don’t take notice of the bad weather. This plan will assure the safety of tourists,” Benavente said. Earlier, the Boating Safety Unit commander, Sgt. Juan D. Diaz, said since the start of 2005, there have been three drowning incidents at the Grotto, the latest of which involved two tourists.

5.8 earthquake hits Marianas region

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 occurred in the CNMI and Guam on Tuesday night, according to the Emergency Management Office. No damage to property or injuries were reported as of yesterday late afternoon. Juan T. Camacho, EMO's geophysical seismic technician, said that no tsunami bulletin was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii. Camacho said the earthquake was not strong enough to cause damage to property. "It was felt [in the CNMI] because it was shallow or about 80 kilometers deep," Camacho said. EMO stated in its bulletin that the earthquake, which occurred at 10:27pm, was located 95 miles south southwest of Saipan, 79 miles south southwest of Tinian, and 20 miles south southwest of Rota. The temblor was also 175 miles of Anatahan and 45 miles northeast of Guam, EMO said, citing information received from the National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado. A Susupe resident said she was in her house's restroom when she felt the quake for a few seconds. "I thought I felt dizzy or I was going crazy. I then walked around and later learned from my neighbor that it was an earthquake," she said. Last Nov. 30, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 occurred 65 miles east-southeast of Rota, 95 miles south southeast of Saipan, and 170 miles south southeast of Anatahan. There was also no reported damage to property.
