Babauta says he’s “pleased and proud” of the Grotto rehabilitation project. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday. “This will be my last ribbon-cutting as governor and I am quite pleased that this final act is one that protects the environment of our islands,” Babauta said. According to the outgoing governor, the project cost $268,000 and was the work of conctractor RNV Construction. He said the Department of Lands and Natural Resources should be commended for “enhancing” the famous Grotto dive site in Marpi. The improvements to the site include the construction of a pavilion, walkways, restrooms, picnic tables, barbecue pits, a paved parking lot, an improved drainage system, and a lookout ramp for tourists. Babauta said the runoff that once went down into the Grotto has now been redirected to a ponding basin. The site, moreover, now has a circular driveway and designated parking for buses and passenger vehicles. A viewing platform has also been built, allowing people to see the Grotto clearly without having to go down into the site. Bathrooms and water catchments were also constructed to ensure that sanitary standards are maintained. “In our extremely competitive tourism market, we must never lose sight of our natural assets, especially those that have been recognized worlddise as among the best. Our Grotto is ranked among the best dive spots in the world and we must do everything within our means to continue protecting and beautifying it,” DLNR Secretary Richard B. Seman said. He added, “What we are all seeing here is a result of good cooperation and a reflection of people working together to benefit the community and protect our environment.” Outgoing Marianas Visitors Authority Chairman, David Sablan said the CNMI should be proud of the project. “We need to take care of this site so that it will not lose its charm and will continue to fascinate our visitors,” Sablan said, adding that the CNMI must continue to implement upgrades, renovations and improvements to entice more tourists and investors. Saipan Tribune 2006/1/8の記事 Improved Grotto opened to public Tourists and divers can now visit a new and improved Grotto, which was formally opened to the public Friday morning. Working up to his last day in office, Gov. Juan N. Babauta led a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Grotto rehabilitation project. Led by the Department of Lands and Natural Resources, the tourist site enhancement cost the local government $268,000.
