天皇皇后両陛下は本日6月28日午後5時半ころサイパン空港を飛び立ち日本へ帰国されました。
あいにくの雨の中11時半ころ両陛下がアメリカンメモリアルパークを訪れた際の画像です。

天皇皇后両陛下は6月27日午後4時半ころサイパンに無事到着されました。 あいにくの雨模様になりましたが空港近くの沿道には日系人を中心に数百人の人が垂れ幕や日の丸で両陛下を 迎えました。

終戦６０年に当たり、サイパン島を訪問いたします。
サイパン島は第一次世界大戦後、国際連盟の下で、日本の委任統治領になり、沖縄県民をはじめとする多くの人々が島に渡り、島民と共にさとうきび栽培や製糖業に携わるなど、豊かな暮らしを目指して発展してきました。
しかし、先の大戦により、この平和な島の姿は大きく変わりました。昭和１９年６月１５日には米軍が上陸し、孤立していた日本軍との間に、２０日以上にわたり戦闘が続きました。６１年前の今日も、島では壮絶な戦いが続けられていました。
食料や水もなく、負傷に対する手当てもない所で戦った人々のことを思うとき、心が痛みます。亡くなった日本人は５万５０００人に及び、その中には子供を含む１万２０００人の一般の人々がありました。同時にこの戦いにおいて、米軍も３５００人近くの戦死者を出したこと、また、いたいけな幼児を含む９００人を超える島民が戦闘の犠牲となったことも決して忘れてはならないと思います。
私どもは１０年前、終戦５０年に当たり、先の大戦で特に大きな災禍を受けた東京、広島、長崎、沖縄の慰霊の施設を巡拝し、戦没者をしのび、尽きることのない悲しみと共に過ごしてきた遺族に思いを致しました。また、その前年には小笠原を訪れ、硫黄島において厳しい戦闘の果てに玉砕した人々をしのびました。
この度、海外の地において、改めて、先の大戦によって命を失ったすべての人々を追悼し、遺族の歩んできた苦難の道をしのび、世界の平和を祈りたいと思います。
私ども皆が、今日の我が国が、このような多くの人々の犠牲の上に築かれていることを、これからも常に心して歩んでいきたいものと思います。
終わりに、この訪問に当たり、尽力された内閣総理大臣はじめ我が国の関係者、また、この度の私どもの訪問を受け入れるべく力を尽くされた米国並びに北マリアナ諸島の関係者に深く感謝いたします。

共同など日本のメディアは26日天皇皇后両陛下のサイパン訪問が正式に決まったことを報道しました。
今まで何度も幻に終わった天皇皇后両陛下のサイパン訪問話ですが 6月に訪問されることが4月26日の閣議で正式に決まりました。
両陛下は6月27日から1泊2日の予定でサイパン島を慰霊のために訪問されるとのことです。 27日午後羽田を出発。同日サイパン島に到着され28日にラストコマンドポストやバンザイクリフを訪れる予定で、 28日午後日本へ戻られる予定です。
また現地サイパンの日刊紙 Marian Variety と Saipan Tribune は、ともに4月27日の紙面でこのことを伝えています。

Japan confirms imperial couple’s NMI visit By Jude O. Marfil Variety News Staff Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will visit Saipan on June 27 and 28 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, according to Japan’s Consulate here. Consul Takeo Saito, in a statement, said the imperial couple will “pay tribute to those who died in the war and to pray for world peace.” The Northern Marianas was administered by Japan from 1914 to 1944. Press Secretary Peter A. Callaghan, in an interview, said the “administration is thrilled - we look forward to it with great excitement and anticipation.” He added, “This is a historic visit…a great opportunity for Japan and the CNMI to have closer ties.” Callaghan said the governor has instructed Public Safety Commissioner Santiago Tudela to ensure the security of the imperial couple and their entourage. A committee headed by Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Vicky I. Benavente will make preparations for the two-day visit. “The committee is composed of representatives from airlines, the hospitality industry and tour operations - pretty much those who came to the recent tourism summit,” she said. Benavente said the government has ample time to prepare for the trip. “Even in two weeks’ time, I think we could do it. After all, this is an opportunity of a lifetime for us.” Tourist sites, including the war memorials at Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff, are being inspected to address any logistical and security concerns involving the imperial couple’s visit. Benavente said they are expecting more than 100 media people to cover the imperial couple’s visit. “This will provide a phenomenal amount of publicity for the CNMI,” she said. “ This will create a global awareness about the islands. This is just the best thing that could happen to the CNMI.” Benavente said the last time the CNMI hosted a high-level visit was when then- Vice President George H.W. Bush came to Saipan in the 1980s. |
